Israel had been almost totally destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar. He took the best and brightest youth to Babylon. Because of idol worship, the nation that God chose to reveal Himself to was taken into captivity by a pagan nation, and Jerusalem was completely razed. After seventy years, the Jews were allowed to return to rebuild the city. Their place of worship was gone. The walls of the city were broken down. Of the returning captives, few remembered the old Jerusalem.
There was much repair work to be done. The people had also suffered much heart destruction because of their sin, their enculturation into Babylonian society, and their distance from God. In Nehemiah 8:1-8, we find the people began a program of public Bible reading and teaching. The purpose was to repair the inward man as well as the infrastructure of Jerusalem.
If the people rebuilt the city without rebuilding their broken hearts, the society would never survive. That is why public Bible reading and study was instituted. This blog has been established because many of us wanted to read the Bible together. We have adapted a two-year program of Bible reading and study, and this blog site is for recording our discussions, reflections, and questions concerning what we are learning.
The schedule will begin Monday, April 16, 2007. Join in if you like.
